Jill Hume - Ironman Triathlete and Kona Qualifier
As an inexperienced triathlete I came to Lawrence for a training weekend. Lawrence was recommended to me by a good friend of mine who had employed Lawrence to coach him for long distance triathlon over several years and whose improvement had been dramatic.
I had entered my first Ironman in August 2006- Austria July 2007, and came to Lawrence to seek advice and hopefully an honest assessment of my ability. Over the short space of two days I found Lawrence and his wife Lisa to be inspirational. The technical advice Lawrence provided both during training activities in all three disciplines, plus strength and core stability work and in a class room environment were pitched at just the right level for us his target group (a very mixed bag).
I went into the weekend apprehensive and lacking in confidence and came out the other end with a huge grin, and feeling as though what I had taken on was achievable. I knew that with some concentration on the things Lawrence had said would benefit from more focus, I might even do well. I will always remember Lawrence’s parting words to me from that weekend ‘keep in touch, I will be interested in how you go in your first Ironman’, I was excited and inspired.
It took me a week when I returned home before I called Lawrence up and asked if he would consider coaching me. I never looked back. My first Ironman was 11:00:07, a year later 11:00:00 and 16 months later 10:25:47 and a qualification for the Ironman World Championships in Kona!
Lawrence is a rock. He is a patient and very flexible coach. Working full time and fitting in long distance training is no small challenge and Lawrence helps to fit everything together, just like a jigsaw- it takes some working out and with good communication and plenty of two way feedback, the picture comes together and the final piece is race day- when the picture is complete (what a great analogy- even though I do say so myself ;-)). I must be one of Lawrence’s most high maintenance athletes but Lawrence never let me down when I was having a crisis through confidence, injury or work- life- training imbalance, Lawrence helped me work through it and always found a way through or round challenges.
I would recommend Lawrence as a coach to any person of any ability, he has the knowledge, experience and patience to take the complete novice through to the elite athlete and ensure that they make the most out of themselves and achieve their best performance.
What a shame he had to go and move to New Zealand- our loss is their gain!

I was introduced to Lawrence in August 2006 by a friend he had coached, with great success, that year and he has been a fantastic coach for me since.
I’d previously been self coached and was disappointed with my performance, having over-trained and been injured preparing for events and not tapering correctly.
Working with Lawrence has allowed me to maximise my training time, completely restructure my sessions, with progressive programmes, and he’s provided great encouragement and guidance along the way. I now train more effectively, race harder and have greater confidence in my ability.
I work hard and lead a busy life. Having a monthly plan allows me to organise my training without thinking about what session I should be doing next. A weekly phone call provides feedback to fine tune things, reinforce my achievements and pick me up when things don't quite go to plan!
He has always been realistic, takes time to understand your goals, and achieve them based on sound scientific principles.
I would highly recommend Lawrence as a coach.
